Wain
A real-time meetup app for web and Android. Friends share one link and watch each other arrive on a live map, each with their own route and a traffic-aware arrival time, right down to the last 50 metres.

The film
Real footage of the running app, edited in code with Remotion. One source renders every version: English and Egyptian Arabic, four aspect ratios, teasers and 30-second ads.
What it does
One link, any phone
Start a meetup and share a code or a link. Friends join from Android or from a browser.
Watch each other arrive
Everyone's car moves live on one map, each with its own route and a traffic-aware arrival time.
The last 50 metres
A finder points you at your friend and counts the distance down when you're close.
Chat, call, buzz
Chat and WebRTC voice calls inside the meetup, plus a buzz to get someone's attention.
Airport pickups
Flight tracking, so whoever is picking someone up knows when the plane actually lands.
A friend in an Uber?
Ride lookups for friends coming by taxi or ride-hailing. On Android, sharing keeps working with the screen off.
Moving it onto my own server
Wain started on Supabase and Vercel. I moved the backend onto my own server: a Node.js service with SQLite for its data and live channels for real-time updates, behind Caddy for HTTPS. Like every app on that server, it runs under its own Linux user, and its code is deployed from my PC.
How that server is organised is written up in Lab 01.
